This post was written for Minnesota Monthly’s TC Style Blog: Mark my words, 2013 will bring the return of minimalism to mainstream fashion. While ever present on the runway year after year thanks to minimalist powerhouses such as Jil Sander, Maison Martin Margiela and Calvin Klein, finding unembellished clothing from mass retailers has proven to be exceedingly difficult.

Minimalism speaks more to style than anything else. It strips away any distracting fluff and frill, and when worn just right, accentuates the certain “je nais se quoi” of the woman wearing it. Minimalism asks us to be a bit more thoughtful, notice subtly and nuance, and have the confidence to let our God-given uniqueness be the accessory.

I’m not suggesting it be a fashion faux-pas to layer on three scarves or three watches for that matter (both of which I’m guilty of), but I’m hoping that the return of minimalism encourages us to be a little more care-free.

Have you started to simplify your everyday styling? I’ve been into pairing an oversized men’s button down with a large men’s cashmere sweater, worn with legging and sneakers. The look also pairs well with riding boots. Heels and handbags pack an extra punch with minimalist clothing, too. Try a sky-high heel with loose fitting jeans and a tight white crew neck tee.

And what would a post about minimalist fashion be without remembering Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy? While Carolyn could have worn today’s trends and still outshined any statement necklace, her personal style mixed a polished elegance and an airy naturalness that was only more magnetic in a classic black suit, red lip, and low chignon.
