Candles flickering. A chicken roasting in the oven. Our house smells of Fraiser fir as Louis Armstrong floats into the living room. No holiday season is without a million places to be, and quiet moments like these are few and far between.
While I enjoy a good party here and there, I’m a homebody at heart — happiest in jeans vs. a pencil skirt. Slipping on my favorite pair of jeans is one of the best feelings. For me, it ranks alongside a hug from an old friend and my mom’s homemade pumpkin bread. It’s especially important to find time to enjoy these small moments when the social calendar is packed, so today’s post is about making time to celebrate the holidays at home, with the people who matter most to you.
It’s our first Christmas at the house, and the fireplace is at the center of our home. We have a bar cart close by, and since it’s turned colder outside, we’ve been chipping away at our supply of bourbon. Sometimes we throw pillows on the floor and take our cocktails around the coffee table. This little party can happen for happy hour, on a Saturday afternoon, or a Sunday night — any time you have a spare moment to turn off the TV, sit across from your loved one, and ask, “How are you?”
Here’s my recipe for the perfect night in:
1. Blanton’s Bourbon with a splash of sparkling water, squeeze of lemon, drop of honey, and a garnish of thyme.
2. Your favorite pair of jeans. I love my pair of Levi’s 501 Original Jeans because they’re the only boyfriend jean that fits like a true boyfriend jean.
3. Music that takes you to a different place and time.
4. Beeswax candles. Lots of them.
5. Pillows. Lots of the those, too.
I hope this holiday season brings you lots of small moments for you to savor at home. How do you unwind during this crazy time of year?
