Seeing Double: Spaces That Work Overtime
Living in a small(ish) older home has plenty of quirks. Rarely is there a true right angle; the floors creak and will slope to one side; and the windows leak. In my opinion, all of these annoyances are totally worth it when living in a home with character. While I wouldn’t trade my older home for a new one anytime soon, I have to accept that an older home’s charm won’t make more space for our shoes.
Now that we have another little human in the house, we’re looking for ways to maximize the space we have. I am currently obsessed with turning our sunroom a mudroom. I recently fell down the Pinterest rabbit hole after searching for “dual purpose rooms” and found some really great inspiration for other rooms in our house.
Let’s start with this mudroom/laundry room combo (pictured above). I would love to have laundry right next to the backdoor. How to convenient! I like how this room doesn’t necessarily feel like a laundry room.
We have three bedrooms in our house and as of now, we don’t have a guest room. We’d love to find a way to incorporate a small bed in one of the bedrooms. I like how this nursery/guest room shows how a nursery can still feel like a special place for your guests.
Another great idea for an office/guest room (pictured above). There are so many bungalows in MSP/STP with large attic spaces, which can be awkward to work with. The layout pictured here would be a smart way to turn that large space into a work space AND a place for guests to crash.
One last office/guest room image for inspiration. I love how the built-ins make this teeny tiny space feel super cozy (and functional)!
I’m not a big crafter, but I like to wrap presents. This means I have lots of fun papers and ribbons all over the house. I’d love to have one area for all of that stuff and this craft/laundry room shows if you plan ahead, you might be able to find space in your kitchen or laundry room for a craft or wrapping station.
Lastly, this closet/office is another great idea for your spare bedroom. I can only dream of a closet like this one!!
