Just Enough Boho, Thanks to The Citizenry

Our house is really starting to look like home.

That was the thought I had while looking around our living room last weekend. I had found a moment of quiet to capture for myself while August took a morning nap. There were no e-mails to respond to, and no Winnie hair to vacuum up– a very, very rare occurrence. A pile of colorful blocks sat idle where August had previously been making a ruckus and one little sock had escaped his foot and found a resting place in the dining room. I found myself smiling as I discovered these little fragments of life scattered throughout the house, and in that moment I realized that while I spent hundreds of hours designing this place to my exact specifications, the trail August leaves in his wake is the most perfectly imperfect decor accessory. It’s amazing how things change when you bring kids into your house– especially if you enjoy precarious and somewhat unrealistic decorating opportunities. While we’ve always leaned towards a lived-in look in our home, I worried that the smattering of baby toys and gear would tip the lived-in vibe towards chaotic. Contrary to what many readers warned me about, I haven’t necessarily lost my decor identity after baby, we’ve just altered it a bit to adjust to the flexibility necessary to stay sane as parents. Sharp corners and coffee tables go out, soft pillows and leather ottomans come in.

Sure, there are plenty of messes that are impossible to romanticize. But in that moment, it felt like my passion for decor and willingness to let life happen in our house had found a happy medium.

We’ve built a great relationship with The Citizenry over the years– I even visited the HQ while visiting Dallas for work, and have enjoyed watching their company grow while empowering communities across the world. Since we needed to make some changes around the house to accommodate this more “relaxed” style, we brought some new items from The Citizenry into our most lived-in spaces.

If you haven’t been to their site in a while, it’s definitely worth visiting. Here’s an overview of our most coveted pieces below:

The Sadira Beni Ourain Rug is masterfully hand-knotted using thick sheep’s wool, this pile-knot rug features the iconic patterns of the nomadic tribes in Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains. Each one takes almost a month to complete. I love how thick and plush this rug is and how it really warms up my bedroom. (Since all of The Citizenry’s items are handcrafted in small batches, this style is currently sold out; if you don’t want to wait for the next batch to land, the Nura Rug is a great alternative in the meantime.)

The Samira Brass Side Tables – Tall highlight a hallmark of Moroccan design – brass. To complement this material, they added a solid oak base, the perfect blend of style and substance. All made start-to-finish in a fair trade workshop in Marrakech. I love this table and feel like the brass brings a rich glow to the room.

The La Riada Bed Blanket is a contrasting mix of soft blues, topped with bold tassels, this baby alpaca blanket is the ultimate luxury. Thanks to its unique construction featuring a different weaving technique in each stripe, it’s incredibly soft and cozy. All handwoven in a fair trade cooperative in the mountains of Peru.

The Riad Leather Floor Pillow is inspired by the laid-back lifestyle of the Moroccan riad, these lounge-worthy leather accents are handcrafted using the highest quality, locally-sourced leather. All made start-to-finish in a fair trade workshop in Marrakech. Joe and I like this floor pillow in the living room, it mixes well with all our other leather pieces and acts as a luxurious and buttery soft accent to the room.
