Embracing the Scent of the Season

Interiors & Decor

As fellow Minnesotans (and Midwesterners!) can attest, the seasonal change from fall to winter often feels like it happens overnight. One day you are walking in glorious sixty-degree weather with leaves crunching beneath your feet, and, quite literally, the next day sleet is whipping at your face when you walk from your car into your home. It’s a hard transition, and for quite awhile, one I didn’t embrace. Our winters can be so long and brutal, that I’ve always held on to fall as long as possible, dreading the moment the weather dipped below 32º.

“Hygge” is a term that I know has made the rounds in the last few years. It’s the Danish term of embracing that feeling of coziness. Knowing the north is my home, I’ve decided to lean into the season and practice hygge and welcome the opportunity to dig into the house and be as snug as possible.

Since being more mindful of the seasonality, I’ve noticed how all of my senses go into overdrive. As soon as the temperature dips below 50, I find myself pulling out all our warm, cozy blankets, lighting a fire, making apple pies and other savory dishes. Being pregnant has taken my home prep to the next level – I want everything to be either incredibly soft or ridiculously warm, including smells. As soon as I started to feel a chill in the air, all I wanted was for my home to smell like evergreen. In fact, I think we had the fireplace roaring, and the first Frasier Fir candle lit in October this year.

A few years back, I discovered the Fraiser Fir aroma – I was living in a small apartment and didn’t have the space or the time to manage a real Christmas tree. Being a resourceful gal, I trimmed my tiny, little, fake tree, and lit a Frasier Fir candle. Voilá! Instant Christmas cheer.

There was a time when I would only put the scent out once my tree was up, and the house was holiday ready. Now? As Joe can attest, as soon as I feel that first chill in the air, candles are lit, and a roaring fire is built.

Wanting to extend that hygge to my second home (aka the office), I bring Frasier Fir in its other iterations: diffusers, home fragrance mists, and travel candles. These days, one would be convinced that we operate a Christmas tree side business out of the space.

This scent from Thymes comes in a variety of options – from beautiful candles that look stunning anywhere in the home to diffusers that blend with other holiday and home décor – the evergreen scent is even included in hand lotions and soaps this year. A perfect host/hostess gift, stocking stuffer or to bring for your office’s Secret Snowflake gift exchange.

A special treat for all W&D readers – we’ve teamed up with Fraiser Fir to offer 15% off ALL Fraiser Fir items using the promo code WITDELIGHT. (promotion ends November 24, 2017) I go through quite a few of these candles throughout the hygge season, so it’s an excellent opportunity to stock up!

Certain scents really do set the tone of the season.

I love the hygge trend. These scents really do sound lovely!
