WD x Sunday Suppers Cookbook: A Gathering

Beef corned at home. Hand-rolled pretzels dipped in a made-from-scratch stout mustard.  Slowly simmered stock and earthy root vegetables. Today we share my Sunday Suppers gathering at home in St. Paul, MN. The Sunday Suppers cookbook isn’t exactly about providing quick and easy tips for getting food on your table. As a whole, these recipes are a lesson in how (and why) to make simple things the right way. These recipes bring Karen’s workshops to life in your own kitchen, which is almost at good as attending one in NYC.

Welcome to our dining room. For the first time ever, Joe and I have space to entertain. We can fit a modest 8 people around the table, and have really enjoyed making this space dedicated to sitting down for proper meals. We don’t have a TV on the main floor, and our fireplace serves as the after dinner gathering place.  The table spread you see here doesn’t feature our best china. It’s what we use everyday– items that are purpose-built but elegant enough to elevate everyday meals.

This menu pulled me out of my comfort zone! I learned a lot about curing salt (that’s what makes corned beef pink), and that a beef broth simmered with cloves, cinnamon, and thyme is the most comforting smell you can have lingering in your house. I also learned that I LOVE braised cabbage and can eat it by the pound. Noteworthy: Karen’s apple and olive oil cake is good enough to turn a non-sweets person into a believer. This meal is both special and relaxed enough to be the perfect menu for the holiday season, and could even replace turkey or ham on Christmas day.

A big thanks to the crew at Sunday Suppers for asking us to be a part of their gathering tour, and to Melissa Oholendt for using her talents to capture the meal you see here.
