I love this sentiment but, admittedly, I’m pretty conservative when it comes to what I wear. I try to be focused on style over trend; only adding a few key pieces that can be sustained over time, although I think it has more to do with not wanting to over think getting dressed. All that said, I also want to be true to myself and have a little fun. It’s fashion. Why not take a risk? What’s the worst thing that could happen aside from someone saying you look a bit like Steve Urkel? And if you’re really going against the grain, maybe you like portraying a little Urkel in your sock selection.
It’s fall, and I’ve seen plaid everywhere and I was inspired to experiment with the Adam Lippes for Target collection and satisfy both my conservative “a few key pieces to add to the wardrobe” side and my fun “what the hell, wear them all at the same time {mic drop}” side.
I have been on an ongoing quest to determine the quintessential “Kate Arends” style. In this style journey, I’m challenging myself to branch out from my simple, classic basics, maybe break a few rules.
With both sides satisfied, I determined I do have one hard and fast fashion rule: be true to yourself.

Thank you for being here. For being open to enjoying life’s simple pleasures and looking inward to understand yourself, your neighbors, and your fellow humans! I’m looking forward to chatting with you.
Love the socks! And indeed….don’t care what other people think! Wear whatever you feel like 🙂
Definitely don’t bother with trends… unless it is one you love! I am totally ruled by my emotions (not always a good thing) and I tend to dress according to them, too. It’s fun!
p.s.
That top photo is so cute!
The boots are perfection paired with that pretty black coat! Nothing better than a good B&W pairing!

I am not a fashion expert by any means, but I agree with you about the rules thing. If I want to ear white, I don’t need anyone telling me it is out of season lol.
I pair blue and black all the time, whether it be for church or a business meeting. I Love It!
Loved loved loved the part about the socks. I mean, who really looks (at least on men) at the socks, right?
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. Serious enough to intrigue me, yet I got some laughs out of it. Kudos! God Bless!
Amazing pants, looks great!
Great style post!! <3
