Spring is almost here! I whisper softly to myself after the third April blizzard in Minneapolis. After all, it even got into the mid-60s this week. I think we are finally in the clear. While eagerly anticipating the “real” arrival of spring, sans snow, we’ve been busy playing with fresh and glossy new beauty products in the studio. A couple weeks ago, we brought in makeup artist, Peter Phung, and let him work his magic on some of our favorite ladies. Afterward, I sat down with him to chat about his work, because after all, at the ripe age of 31, I am still learning how to do my own makeup.
This is what’s new in this season’s makeup land.
This spring is all about subtle, yet bright pops of color, according to Phung. You want to keep your makeup and skin fresh while not overdoing it. When beginning your daily makeup routine, always keep your skin dewy and natural. Skin prep should include a good moisturizer and eye cream. Here are a few of Phung’s favorites: Aveda hydrating lotion, Glossier Priming Moisturizer, MAC Strobe Cream and Aveda Tulasara Renew Morning Creme.
Next, he reaches for the Hourglass Vanish Stick Foundation as a concealer and the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer concealer, these two will give you that natural glow you’ve been craving. Top that off with a bit of Laura Mercier translucent powder to heighten your glow.
For a rosey blush try Nars Orgasm or Glossier Cloud Paint.
If you are looking for an eyeshadow with a colorful pop, which is what this season is all about, Phung recommends – Viseart.
Insider tip: Always curl your eyelashes before you apply mascara (I just learned this) and then reach for L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Waterproof Mascara.
To complete your look add a light gloss on your lips. Phung swears by Kiehl’s #1 Lip Balm, Dr. Jart Beauty Balm, and Burt’s Tinted Balm. Go for sheer washes of lipstick, patted/tapped in for that naturally stained look and feel.
To complete your look – apply Tacha Dewy Mist which acts as a moisturizing finishing spray.

Are you hoping to take your glam to the next level this spring? See the four different looks (for a wide array of hair, eye and skin tones) that we landed on after experimenting with Phung’s fresh new color palette. As we look to get the season underway, which spring-inspired style is your favorite?!
If you have dark eye color and an olive complexion – try a bronzed/rosey-colored eyeshadow with a pop of pink warmth on both the lips and around the cheekbones. This will help you achieve that dewy glow and warmth you’ve been dreaming of!
If you fit into that rare/special 1-2% of the population that has red hair – try a forest green eyeshadow with a pale nude lip to contrast and compliment your skin tone and hair color. This will give you that funky little pop of color without going overboard.
For fairer skin with light or dark eyes – try a blue coral eyeshadow with a very light nude/peach lip. This small pop of color on your eyes will steal the show, while the peach lip color will still subtly complement your magical eyes.
If you have darker skin it is fun to add a pop of color to your eyes and lips – try playing around with warm tones like red, cranberry, pink, yellow or gold on both your skin, lips, and eyes. This combination of yellows and reds plays nicely together while making your complexion really come to life!
Start by adding a bold lip. (While making sure your lip compliments whatever is going on with your eyes!)
To heighten the intensity and focus on your eyes, continue your eyeshadow underneath your eyes to create a sexy edge around your entire eye.
To finish this look, add a touch of eyeliner where it feels best!
