Welcome to the one and only room in our house that is both peaceful and *almost* finished. We had a few issues arise when furniture arrived, mostly because I grossly underestimated how much space Joe’s socks and tees need to stay organized! Aside from the white sofa (which you’ve seen in approximately five different rooms in this house and our previous house), pink bench, and black dresser, every piece in this room was selected specifically for this space. At some point in the future, we’ll need to source a dresser that isn’t falling apart to replace the existing black dresser, and we’ll ideally replace the existing sofa with a different small sofa or oversized chair. Once we find those pieces, the design of the room will officially be complete.
All in all, I love how this room turned out. I love that we didn’t have to pay to repaint the existing green trim. It’s a place that feels like an escape at the end of the day, and a relaxing place to wake in the morning. I love that my kids love hanging out in there with us. I love that we can watch movies together, read books, and spend time together. To me, that’s a successful room redesign!
Before we get to the current photos, let’s take a walk down memory lane…
This is what the empty bedroom space looked like when we moved in.
This was our original furniture setup.
In November, we painted the lower half of the room as well as the ceiling.
Then we added wallpaper.
We also tested out a new and improved layout.
This leads us to today. Below, you’ll find photos and details on our (almost completely) finished main bedroom—our family’s little haven amid construction chaos. Without further ado, let’s take a tour.
We originally had our bed facing the two southern windows, which was lovely but never really felt like it made the best use of the space. Now we have it facing west. The new layout gave us room to add a TV to the wall opposite the bed and optimize the positioning of the dressers.
I always dreamt about having a bedroom with traditional wallpaper. When I found this pattern by Sandberg I was so excited to realize the sample fit perfectly with the color of the existing trim. It was fate!
The ceiling was painted the same color as the original wall treatment and we thought a darker green ceiling would make the room feel cozier than the rest of the house. It does! We also extended the paint color to the ceiling in our pink bathroom, which helps bring cohesion between the two adjoining spaces.
I love ceiling fans but this room really needed a pendant light that packed some punch. I love the one I found from Frontgate.
In all the rooms I’ve marked in interior design books, I realized many had either large sisal rugs or wall-to-wall sisal carpeting. I think it’s a lovely way to bring in more warmth, especially because the condition of the floors in our house is not great. We also added a plush white rug atop the sisal rug to add additional texture and warmth underfoot.
We lived with our previous home’s bedroom furniture for a while in this space and it worked…just fine. While this is a large room, the four-poster bed we had before made the space seem visually smaller. We swapped just about every piece of furniture for pieces in deeper wood tones, beige lacquer, a little bit of rattan, and splashes of brass. All of the furniture has a modern feeling to it, which makes the very traditional wallpaper feel more eclectic than stuffy.
I had been on the hunt for some cabana striped bedding for months and really love the buttery yellow and cream color of this duvet we snagged from HAY.
This is our first time having a TV in the bedroom and we love it. I was reluctant to add it at first but with this addition, this room has truly become a place where the whole family can hang out and relax. It’s really nice for putting on the news in the morning and taking yoga classes too.
