Time has a way of shedding light on truths we try to hide from. You may believe what you ignore can’t hurt you, but the funny thing is, the more you ignore it, the closer it follows you.
No matter how good we become at avoiding our unrest, our unfinished business, the facts we must face and the feelings we must feel, they’ll eventually present themselves in a way that is rarely a conscious decision. As we turn the corner into the last month of a decade, time well spent (or time not spent at all) will be at the top of all our minds.
There is a reason why unrest resurfaces around this time year after year, despite our efforts, both conscious and subconscious, to suppress it. Because finding peace with what is—both with the facts and with our thoughts about those facts—is a fundamental need for most humans.
The truth is, if you do not have peace, then you are not able to recognize what you actually have. In other words, if you do not have peace, you’re not going to be able to see all the good in your life.
Here are a few ways to help find peace in your life:
This month, let’s explore the ways we can find peace in unexpected places. In our shortcomings, in facing our unconsciousness, in taking back our power and agency where we lost it. Sometimes, finding peace requires action. Sometimes all it requires is acceptance.
In the month ahead, our contributors will be writing about starting new habits before the new year begins. They’ll be exploring ways we can practice presence in our everyday lives. They’ll be writing about why it’s okay to be angry sometimes, and about the lessons they’ve learned in the past decade, among a host of other topics. We can’t wait to share their words and insights with you in the weeks ahead.
As we move toward the end of the year, I invite you to look at the end of this decade as an opportunity to let go of the past, find peace with what you cannot change, and know that peace is available inside yourself, regardless of what you may be facing.
