Summer Camp, Adult Style: 5 Unique Vacation Retreats for When You Crave a Getaway

Travel & Leisure

I can still vividly remember my first summer camp experience. The swimming, the laughing, the trying to learn how to make a fire from twigs and rocks—oh, Camp Chestnut Ridge. What beautiful, simple memories. If you, too, are having some major summer camp nostalgia these days, the good news is that you’re not alone. Adult summer camps are springing up all over the U.S. From women-only retreats to culinary getaways, we’ve rounded up five fantastic options below.

1) Yoga Camp

Don’t let the name fool you—yoga is just one of the many activities offered at Kripalu’s Yoga Summer Camp in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Here, camp goers can disconnect and enjoy an abundance of simple pleasures, such as hiking, paddleboarding, dancing, and movement classes. Surrounded by a peaceful, pristine lake, the camp also offers creative workshops and nature observation seminars.

When: June 16-21; July 7-12; August 11-16

2) Total Relaxation Camp

If you grew up counting down the days until summer camp, allow Wisconsin’s Camp Halcyon to manifest that lively childhood spirit while walking you down memory lane. Combining some of the best traditional pastimes—stargazing and s’mores, to name a few—with perks of adulthood like wine tastings and no counselors, you’ll have the freedom to do (pretty much) whatever you please.

When: July 4-7; August 15-18; October 3-6

3) Women’s Adventure Camp

Whether you’re looking to reconnect with nature or seeking to meet some awesome new faces, Camp Chief Ouray is a great gateway for all of that and more. Located near Colorado’s beautiful Rocky Mountain National Park, this women-only weekend camp not only teaches outdoor adventure skills, but also offers a ton of activities. From canoeing and zip lining to hiking, pilates, and even goat yoga, a grand adventure is guaranteed.

When: September 6-8

4) Meat-Up Camp

Yes, you read that right—an adult camp dedicated to all things grilling. Coined as “one of the best summer camps for grown-ups” by The Oprah Magazine, Belcampo Meat Camp provides guests with an unforgettable culinary experience. For three days, campers stay in luxury platform tents on the property of Belcampo Farms in Northern California and learn how to cut, grill, serve, and sauce meat.

Keeping simple goals in mind—”to connect you with the source of your food, to inspire you to cook it in a way that is rudimentary and genius all at the same time, and to have fun”—the leaders of Meat Camp will introduce you to a farm-to-fork lifestyle unlike anything else.

When: August 31-September 2

5)Empowerment Camp

Another amazing women-only camp option is Campowerment. This four-day weekend retreat welcomes 100+ women from all across the country to come find home: at the breathtaking location where the camp is being held, in an ever-evolving community of remarkable women, and perhaps most powerfully of all, in themselves. Encouraging mindfulness and play, each experience is built to catalyze growth so you can keep the spark alive beyond the campfire.
