We found out our nanny was retiring when Bennett was a little over a month old. She was a constant in my son’s life, and they were attached at the hip. While it was going to be hard on Joe and I to lose someone so important to making daily life go smoothly, I was at a loss as to how to help August through the transition.

My mother-in-law suggested making a book. She took on the project, pulling in pictures of them exploring Minneapolis and making new friends. She explained where his nanny was going to live and included pictures of his new nanny. It helped August grasp these big changes, that they can feel uncomfortable, and that the new person in our home was here to care for him and to become his new friend in future adventures.

It was brilliant! She put it all together by laminating the pages and linked them together with a ring binder. Since then, we’ve been using pictures and language the kids know and understand to explain hard concepts like time, proximity, why adults leave, and when they come back. It’s a really helpful learning tool, especially for kids who LOVE to read.

I had always wanted a kid-friendly method to tell all the stories we use with the kids, from recapping a vacation to talking about family members who live far away. Now, we can put all the kids’ stories and pictures into a format they know and love: Board Books from our friends at Artifact Uprising!

Artifact Uprising is now offering beautiful, customizable board books with durable pages and premium printing, ranging from 20, 30, and 40 pages. You can select a theme from the following options: People, Places, Thankful, and Custom. The copy, color, and fonts are all easily updated, and you can also do some simple editing to your photos while creating your book.

We will be filing this idea away for Christmas presents and look forward to capturing our family memories with AU—not only for ourselves but now for our kids, too.
