Find Rest & Respite in Your Own Backyard

GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED

These days walking outside to my backyard feels like a vacation in itself. As most of us will be spending the summer staying close to home with our immediate families, we couldn’t be more thrilled to be offering a HUGE giveaway today to help one lucky reader upgrade their backyard entertaining space.

I will admit that outdoor living isn’t where my expertise lies but lately I find myself wandering around Pinterest more and more, collecting images of gorgeous backyards and dreaming of someday creating a space of my own that our kids, neighbors, and friends can enjoy with us.

When it comes to outdoor spaces, the sky is really the limit. You can go big, creating an entire living space complete with lounge furniture and speakers—I’ve even seen people put a T.V. in their outdoor space!! I’m a little more practical (more power to those people who are really going for it!) but it can be easy to become overwhelmed with all the choices AND costs associated with an outdoor space.

After looking at my own space (which is smallish) and my budget (even smaller), I put together a list of easy ways to make a big impact in your backyard.

  1. Clean it up. It seems simple, but if you’re looking at your backyard and feeling a bit “meh” about the space, pull up your sleeves and get a good cardio workout by tackling all the leaves, brush, twigs, and other debris that accumulates over the winter. It’s surprising how much of an impact neat and tidy landscaping can have in improving the use of your outdoor space.
  2. Add lights. Twinkling lights make even the simplest of spaces quaint and romantic. They can help provide better lighting for nighttime fun so you aren’t dancing and drinking under the floodlights.
  3. Create seating areas. Only have a small patio? Create a small area for reading and another for eating and drinking. Use furniture and small outdoor rugs to help divide the space and make the most out of your hard surfaces. And hey, what about adding a hammock or some lawn chairs across the yard? It will draw your attention outward, helping the space feel bigger and more useful.
  4. Add a fire pit. This is a fantastic way to add hardscaping to your space. A fire pit can be used for roasting marshmallows and gathering friends and family long past sunset. And, it’s a surprisingly simple installation process.

We’ve teamed up with Belgard to help make one of these tips a reality for one lucky reader. Belgard is giving away one (1) Flagstone Concrete Fire Pit Kit

This pandemic has really brought me and my sister closer together so it would be cool to share a fire pit night with her! I would have never said this last year. 😂😂

Would love to spend a solid evening chatting under the stars in the back yard while gazing into some flickering flames. Definitely something I’d look forward to once my husband is back from deployment. 💕

Oh, so fun! My husband and I have been thinking through a fire pit in our backyard for the last two months, and haven’t made a move yet. It’s our first house, and we’re eager to spend time with each other outside, as well as invite my dad, who recently lost his job (#pandemiclife) over for a socially distanced chat!

We were planning our wedding for this year, but had to cancel bc of the international travel restrictions imposed (my family are from overseas). I would love to have just a few of those family and friends around to celebrate being able to gather together again.

My husband and I are buying our first home and weren’t sure it would even be possible. The home needs some work and will have to take on the projects slowly, but a fire pit would be so fun to have all of our friends and family over to celebrate this milestone with! I also grew up with a fire pit and would love for my daughter to have one as well! They were the best memories!

May 14, 2020 4:42 pm

We just moved all the way across the country- away from all my friends and family- just before COVID hit. We have SO many friends and family who were planning on coming out and staying with us but have had to put their travels on hold until this is over. So having any and all of our pals to share this with would just make my heart sing. Part of the reason we moved to Arizona was so we could spend as much time as possible outdoors and a fire pit is the one thing we still don’t have even… Read more »

We welcomed two twin baby girls into our family in late November. Now with 3 kids under the age of 3, we try to spend as much time outdoors as possible. We are moving into a home we’ve been building over the last year next month and this fire pit would be a perfect addition to our outdoor space!

We have a group of friends, three families with kids, that we always do vacations and holidays with. We’ve seen them over Zoom and had a birthday party for one of the kids over Zoom! But we can’t wait to see them in person and hang out. This would be awesome to have in our yard when we can have them over.
