Find Rest & Respite in Your Own Backyard

Interiors & Decor

This post is brought to you by Belgard.

These days walking outside to my backyard feels like a vacation in itself. As most of us will be spending the summer staying close to home with our immediate families, we couldn’t be more thrilled to be offering a HUGE giveaway today to help one lucky reader upgrade their backyard entertaining space.

I will admit that outdoor living isn’t where my expertise lies but lately I find myself wandering around Pinterest more and more, collecting images of gorgeous backyards and dreaming of someday creating a space of my own that our kids, neighbors, and friends can enjoy with us.

When it comes to outdoor spaces, the sky is really the limit. You can go big, creating an entire living space complete with lounge furniture and speakers—I’ve even seen people put a T.V. in their outdoor space!! I’m a little more practical (more power to those people who are really going for it!) but it can be easy to become overwhelmed with all the choices AND costs associated with an outdoor space.

After looking at my own space (which is smallish) and my budget (even smaller), I put together a list of easy ways to make a big impact in your backyard.

  1. Clean it up. It seems simple, but if you’re looking at your backyard and feeling a bit “meh” about the space, pull up your sleeves and get a good cardio workout by tackling all the leaves, brush, twigs, and other debris that accumulates over the winter. It’s surprising how much of an impact neat and tidy landscaping can have in improving the use of your outdoor space.
  2. Add lights. Twinkling lights make even the simplest of spaces quaint and romantic. They can help provide better lighting for nighttime fun so you aren’t dancing and drinking under the floodlights.
  3. Create seating areas. Only have a small patio? Create a small area for reading and another for eating and drinking. Use furniture and small outdoor rugs to help divide the space and make the most out of your hard surfaces. And hey, what about adding a hammock or some lawn chairs across the yard? It will draw your attention outward, helping the space feel bigger and more useful.
  4. Add a fire pit. This is a fantastic way to add hardscaping to your space. A fire pit can be used for roasting marshmallows and gathering friends and family long past sunset. And, it’s a surprisingly simple installation process.

We’ve teamed up with Belgard to help make one of these tips a reality for one lucky reader. Belgard is giving away one (1) Flagstone Concrete Fire Pit Kit

This pandemic has really brought me and my sister closer together so it would be cool to share a fire pit night with her! I would have never said this last year. 😂😂

Would love to spend a solid evening chatting under the stars in the back yard while gazing into some flickering flames. Definitely something I’d look forward to once my husband is back from deployment. 💕

I’d love to be able to sit around the fire with my family.

Would love to spend the evening around the fire pit with my family making s’mores and enjoying the night sky!

we can’t wait to be able to have our group of 6 friends over again. we get together once a month, rotating hosts. we are up next, for our first in person get together in 3 months! it would be awesome to host everyone in a lovely new outdoor space with a fancy firepit!

I would share the fire pit with my family!

Oh, so fun! My husband and I have been thinking through a fire pit in our backyard for the last two months, and haven’t made a move yet. It’s our first house, and we’re eager to spend time with each other outside, as well as invite my dad, who recently lost his job (#pandemiclife) over for a socially distanced chat!

I’d love to have my family gather at my parents house for a night of bbq and a bonfire! They have an awesome backyard and it’s the perfect place to gather.

We were planning our wedding for this year, but had to cancel bc of the international travel restrictions imposed (my family are from overseas). I would love to have just a few of those family and friends around to celebrate being able to gather together again.

I would love to spend time with my kids and grandchildren around the fire making s’mores. It’s my birthday today, it will be fun to celebrate together hopefully soon.

I would love to relax around the fire with my husband and son, and my parents!! We’ve been missing our family so much these past many weeks.

My husband and I are buying our first home and weren’t sure it would even be possible. The home needs some work and will have to take on the projects slowly, but a fire pit would be so fun to have all of our friends and family over to celebrate this milestone with! I also grew up with a fire pit and would love for my daughter to have one as well! They were the best memories!

My dad built the kids a huge 8×8 sandbox last summer and we have been building mini fires in it for roasting marshmallows and such. We would love a beautiful (real) fire pit for family ukelele+s’more fun!!!

One of my dearest friends brought a new baby boy into the world & I have the honor of being his godmother. So they are #1 on my list to gather around a cozy fire with!

When everything settles down, I’d like to relax by the fire with my sister and her sled dog.

I miss my family so much. I would love to have my dad, brother, sister in law and their new little baby over for cocktails around a firepit when things loosen up.

I would honestly love to invite all of our neighbors over for a bonfire. We are relatively new to the neighborhood and have yet to meet them all! <3

Would love to spend a night with my parents in front of a fire.

Just moved into our house 4 months ago, and the backyard is a blank slate! Would really enjoy having a fire pit to enjoy with my husband and kids!

We just moved all the way across the country- away from all my friends and family- just before COVID hit. We have SO many friends and family who were planning on coming out and staying with us but have had to put their travels on hold until this is over. So having any and all of our pals to share this with would just make my heart sing. Part of the reason we moved to Arizona was so we could spend as much time as possible outdoors and a fire pit is the one thing we still don’t have even… Read more »

I would totally invite my mother over to share some delicious wines and tapas 😻👍🏻

I would love to have my grandfather over! He turns 90 next week and we can’t have a big celebration for him like we wanted to. I would love for him to come over and see my house and have a beer by the fire pit!

I’d love this for our backyard! I’d enjoy it with my husband and daughter now, and look forward to adding more friends to the circle when it’s safe again

Britney Stevens

This would be a dream! First, Melinda Gates. Then our best friends (who live 2 miles away!) who we haven’t seen in 2 months. Thanks for doing this!

What a dream! First, Melinda Gates. Then our best friends (who lives 2 miles away!) who we haven’t seen in 2 months. Thanks for doing this!

We welcomed two twin baby girls into our family in late November. Now with 3 kids under the age of 3, we try to spend as much time outdoors as possible. We are moving into a home we’ve been building over the last year next month and this fire pit would be a perfect addition to our outdoor space!

We have a group of friends, three families with kids, that we always do vacations and holidays with. We’ve seen them over Zoom and had a birthday party for one of the kids over Zoom! But we can’t wait to see them in person and hang out. This would be awesome to have in our yard when we can have them over.

Erica Pearson

Fun! I’d love to invite my girlfriends and their families over for a backyard hangout once it’s safe.

Can’t wait to enjoy some time outdoors with my wife, Amy, and new little girl Emerson!

I would pour stiff drinks for my working mom friends who have been superwomen and held it *mostly* together through it all.

I would love to have my two best friends over to sit around the fire pit while the husbands man the grill and our kids play together.

Snuggled up with my family and new babe due in June!

I haven’t seen my nieces and nephews since this quarantine started…s’mores sound like the perfect way to celebrate when I see them again!

This would be perfect for my currently empty backyard space! I’m inviting my sisters over for sure for nights and nights of conversation about life. 🙂

My parents and sister and her family who live in Iowa. Looking forward to reuniting with them when it’s safe to travel and roasting marshmallows and cracking jokes.

Emily D

The best conversations happen gathered around a fire pit! I would love to sit around this with my husband and our best friends and talk about things silly and serious.

Our best friends who all have had babies this winter. It’ll be the first time we do an adult only night!

We just bought a house in the suburbs with a great backyard. I’m excited to make some fun memories with family and friends. If we had this fire pit, I’d invite my nephew over to roast marshmallows.

I’d love to invite my cousins over to sing Songs around the campfire that remind us of summer camps from when we were younger; the camps our kids were all looking forward to this summer that have been canceled! It would be cozy and cathartic.

Marit Ernesti

I’d invite my Gramma hands down. Her building has thankfully been on lockdown to keep the older generation safe, but I could use a night of her love and laughter!

Olivia Lepore

My parents deserve a break. They would love to visit and enjoy a night outside around the fire.
