Where do you begin to create a timeless wardrobe that works for you? Or your partner? Joe and I recently did a big closet clean-out to remove things that just didn’t feel like us. What was left made it clear we needed to invest in some chic wardrobe essentials that were missing. 

Over the years, I’ve been collecting statement wardrobe pieces—items that stand out and “make” an outfit—yet I find myself not grabbing them as often as I’d like. Joe expressed a similar sentiment. It was so much fun working with Joe on this project. He’s probably just as into fashion as I am, and we had a blast picking out the pieces together. All of my pieces are from Sézane, while his selects are from Octobre.

With so many options out there, knowing how to put together flattering, mix-and-match pieces can seem overwhelming—I get it! But it doesn’t have to be, and I suggest just jumping in and making some purchases to get started. As you try things on and feel confident wearing high-quality basics, you start to get more comfortable with mixing and matching.

Here are some key essentials that I think should be part of any wardrobe. This is such a classic top. I love that it is lightweight, has a tight collar, and can still be layered over a t-shirt or blouse. It fits true to size.

Don’t let the name fool you—these pants are timeless! The high waist silhouette and straight leg create an elegant, flattering look that can be styled in multiple ways. Wear them with a tucked-in blouse and pointed heels for a timeless evening look, or pair them with a slouchy sweater and sneakers for a modern day-to-day style.

I found these to run on the large size. They are a perfect length to wear with heels but may need to be hemmed.

Brut Sexy Jeans

Their tagline says it all: “The quest for the perfect pair of jeans stops here.” These are high-waisted jeans that look great when paired with a basic tee, boyfriend shirt, or tucked-in tank for a classic look. They can also be dressed up with a blouse or crop top and blazer for a more elevated ensemble.

Unfortunately, these did not fit me in the size I originally ordered! I ordered my usual size but couldn’t button them up. I would go up one to two sizes in this style.

This top runs a little big. I like the oversized look and appreciate that the buttons do not pucker—something large-chested ladies like myself deal with often.
