Since I’ve been shopping vintage more often lately, I’ve been rethinking how I view decor objects. In a past life, I used to scan for perfection and rule out anything that wasn’t pristine. Vintage shopping has challenged me to embrace the weathered, the chipped, and the almost perfect to see the potential that lies beneath. I like to imagine the life these items had before they ended up in a dusty corner, the history behind them, and intent behind making them in the first place. I don’t get that same feeling of wonder when purchasing brand new items.
Bloomist, one of my go-to spots for a vast selection of dried florals and wildly realistic faux options, has an impressive home decor line. Many of these items are new but arrive with a sense of history. The handcrafted nature of these items means that every piece carries its own “imperfections” and differences. Imbued in each piece is the story of the artisan, the craft, and the location of its creation, such as the Bird Vase and Kado Vase; both come from small batch makers in New York City.
Not only does Bloomist support the artisans, but they also work directly with antique dealers to curate a selection of vintage pieces straight from the source. The grey vase sitting on my dresser holding flowers used to hold grains. The small stool was once used by farmers. Bloomist worked directly with an antique dealer in China to repurpose a rare vintage collection. Sourced from rural environments, these functional objects were used for decades and have the tiny knicks, scratches, and unique markings of a life well lived.
It’s a win-win to utilize pieces that are not only stunning but that you can also feel good about purchasing.
