Kate’s Picks: 7 Things I Tried in June and Loved

Lifestyle

This month’s list is one of my favorites yet. From the facial oil that’s helped me hydrate my fried summer skin, to the best show I’ve watched all year, to the $25 dress I’ve worn more than anything else in my closet, here is June’s Things I Tried and Loved.

Looking for more of my favorite finds? You can find all of my previous posts on this topic here.

COOK

In Bibi’s Kitchen by Hawa Hassan with Julia Turshen

$35

This is a beautiful cookbook featuring the culinary insights of grandmothers (bibis) from eight African countries. I’m excited to experience a small taste of the rich and broad history of African cooking through this deeply personal lens. I cannot wait to cook my way through this entire book!

H&M Dress

$24.99

This dress is light, flowy, and perfect for super hot days. This is a silhouette that works on a number of different body shapes and they have a great selection of colors. Get ‘em while it’s hot outside!

MOISTURIZE

Herbivore Lapis Balancing Facial Oil

$72

The sun has really been drying my skin out and I’ve been loving this product for a concentrated dose of hydration. Plus, the tinted blue color of this oil makes the jar look gorgeous on my bathroom shelf, which has actually enticed me to use it more often! I’m a simple person. Make it pretty and my interest is piqued.

WATCH

Mare of Easttown

Included with an HBO Subscription

I’m that friend telling you to WATCH THIS SHOW SO WE CAN DISCUSS. It’s a modern whodunnit with a complex protagonist and themes that stick with you long after the final episode. At its core, the show is about the many victims of generational trauma. It does touch on themes of suicide and mental illness, so please take care when viewing.

DECORATE

Lyndsay Rebecca Interiors Block Print Pillows

$60 – $80

We purchased a handful of the pillows from this Etsy shop to go with our green couch and I love the variety of prints, colors, and scales they offer. I can recommend the craftsmanship firsthand!

LISTEN

Still Processing Podcast

Included with your podcasting app of choice

Hosted by Jenna Wortham and Wesley Morris of The New York Times, this is THE podcast I listen to when catching up with cultural commentary. New episodes aren’t being released right now, but it’s well worth listening to previous episodes if you haven’t yet!

WRITE

DayGram App

$1.99 in the Apple App Store

This is a super straightforward, simple app that helps keep track of what happened on even the most mundane of days, because time is just going too fast for this mama!

Have you watched the Netflix documentary High on the Hog? It is more about the history of enslaved people in the United States and how they had such a big impact on the food we eat.

If you liked Mare definitely watch Broadchurch if you haven’t yet!

I watched Mare of Easttown last month and really enjoyed it BUT that ending kinda fell a little flat for me. I wasn’t expecting *that person* to be the killer, but when the identity was revealed, I was like “really?” I just didn’t buy it. The rest of the show, though, was absolutely fantastic and the cast was brilliant. I came for Kate Winslet (because she’s my favourite), but I stayed for everyone else. All of the performances were amazing.
