A Whimsical (and Minimal) Update to the Kids’ Bedroom | Wit & Delight

When I was younger, I would collect catalogs and interior design magazines, hoping to pull insights that would help me create “the perfect room.” I’d rip pages out of House Beautiful and Domino, cut out images of chairs from the Crate & Barrel catalog, and store these treasures in folders, eventually collaging them all together to create mood boards for different rooms. These initial mood boards were the beginning of a lifelong obsession with curation and experimenting with the design of my home. The room and home collages would change over time depending on the availability of magazines and catalogs and evolved as I got older and my tastes changed.

Mostly I’ve learned there is no such thing as a perfect room—just a series of good decisions based on how that spaces needs (and wants) to function.

This gradual evolution of taste and aesthetic preferences led me to the “slow design” way of thinking. Living in the rooms in this house and letting the house speak to me over time rather than forging ahead and immediately redecorating everything felt like the right path to take.

In the year we have been living here, we’ve slowly been updating each room on an as-needed basis. We’ve considered the functionality of each space and the minor changes we could make to make any given room feel more like home.

The kids’ room has been a part of this slow design evolution and I love the direction that it is taking. While the room had a ton of character originally (that vintage wallpaper and carpet!), the overall design felt heavy and dark. (You can read more about the other updates we’ve made in this room here.)

The most recent changes (the wallpaper, trim color, and carpet) certainly brightened and lightened up the room, but I wanted to add something unexpected. Years ago, I stayed in a hotel in London, and I still remember the four-poster bed painted electric blue. It was so fun and whimsical; I wanted to recreate that feeling in the kids’ room.

My parents indulged in my design evolution when I was a kid, eventually relenting and letting me paint my room a Pepto pink color. I wanted my kids to experience the same thrill and excitement I felt when I made my room my own. The kids and I had a blast selecting colors and ordering paint chips from the HGTV HOME® by Sherwin-Williams website. We played around with the color visualizer and tried out different combinations of colors in the room. HGTV HOME® by Sherwin-Williams lets you order up to ten paint chips and have them shipped directly to your home.

Choosing the paint color for the bed frames was difficult, but we eventually selected Nurture Green (HGSW 2275) from HGTV HOME® by Sherwin-Williams, a lovely green that complemented and balanced the Afternoon (HGSW1164) yellow trim and blue striped wallpaper. Despite my initial reservations (the first time I walked into the room, I felt dizzy) I knew that it would look great in the end because I used the Color Pizzaz color collection from HGTV HOME® by Sherwin-Williams. The HGTV HOME® by Sherwin-Williams experts have done all the hard work, and you can trust that all of the shades will look great together.

I’ve worked with HGTV HOME by SW in the past (here and here) and I knew I could not only trust the quality of the paint but also the durability. (Insider tip: if you are planning on painting finished wood, like these bed frames, it’s best to sand the finish off first!) We used Ovation Plus (exclusively at Lowe’s), because it provides beautiful coverage with a lasting finish, along with zero VOCs.

I’m over the moon with the look of the bed frames and the overall updates we’ve made to the room. It’s been a trip watching the evolution of the space over the past few months. There are only a few more updates we’ll be making before we are “done” with this room. Stay tuned for more!

Fun! Love the colour combinations, very unexpected. Like it a lot. That wall paper will “grow” with them so well.

Hi Kate! I love this room. I’m wondering who installed the carpet? I’m in the cities as well and considering replacing our upstairs carpet
