Wit & Delight readers, allow me to introduce (or reintroduce!) you to my husband, Joe. He makes occasional stops by the site (and the studio some days, too) to share his signature writing style and dry humor with us all. Today he’s sharing some of his most highly recommended gifts for men (and, I mean, the guy’s got style…I trust his opinion on the topic). Hope you enjoy.
The holidays have quickly become increasingly magical with August and Bennett coming to an age where I can relive the magic of the season with them—we’re talking The Polar Express (we’re on the seventh consecutive night of it being our bedtime book of choice) The Elf on the Shelf, Advent Calendars, and, my personal favorite, cutting the Christmas tree down.
As adults and, more specifically, as parents, we tend to focus 100% of our attention (deservedly so) on our children, ensuring we do our best to recreate the magical experiences that we grew up with for them, and I’d have it no other way. This intense focus can, however, inhibit procuring holiday gifts for the adult men in our lives until the absolute last minute. So when Kate and the W&D team tapped me for some of my current favorite pieces that might make the holidays a bit more straightforward, this list came together quickly, as they’re all things that I currently have/use/wear daily.
Stay tuned for more holiday gift ideas from us in the weeks ahead. If you want more gifting inspiration, be sure to check out our Kate Loves page or our Amazon site.
This Flint and Tinder jacket is a fantastic layering piece. Coming complete with recycled Primaloft® insulation, it’s a handsome layer that looks better with each wear.
This Timex watch is understated and utilitarian, which, in my opinion, are the two major qualities a watch should have. With design inspiration coming from vintage military sunglasses and cockpit instrumentation, it’s a classic watch that is basic in the best way possible.
Admittedly, I’m biased as I work with Vasque and was a driving force behind the re-issue of this iconic boot that debuted in 1988. Lined with GORE-TEX® and re-issued in the same colorways that were offered in 1988, these boots embody the durability, comfort, and ruggedness that have made Vasque one of the most respected brands in the outdoor industry for the past 55 years. *Psssst, they’re also available for women.
Merino wool is an incredibly impressive fiber that will keep you warm in the winter, and it’s natural moisture-wicking properties are perfect for even the coldest January days (hello, Minnesota). The bonus with Bombas? A pair of socks purchased = a pair of socks donated to someone in need.
I’ve had nothing short of a fleet of ‘work bags’ over the years and I can say, without a doubt, that this Topo briefcase reigns supreme. Traditional shoulder bag guy for Monday’s meeting? Good to go. Need it as more of a backpack? Yeah, it’s got changeable backpack straps as well. Ballistic Black is super sleek and can be dressed up or down depending upon the occasion.
Sunglasses are critical in the summer, of course, but I’d argue that they’re equally as important in the winter. The Topper comes in three widths depending upon the shape of your face (I’m a wide) and are just great.
The Therme Parka is the answer to so many jackets I’ve had over the years. Arc’teryx absolutely nailed it with this piece complete with GORE-TEX® 750 fill insulation, and a smart cut that provides versatility from deep in the woods to deep in the city; it’s an investment that is absolutely worth it if you find yourself in a colder climate.
The design team at Topo has been absolutely on point in their most recent seasons in all aspects of what they’ve been bringing to market. This skimo long sleeve illustrates a trippy graphic on the front complete with sleeve graphics that can make even the most ‘dad life’ at the very least appear as if he’s still a little edgy; or at least that’s how I feel when I put it on.
I cannot say enough about the 365 Slim Pant. I calculate value in goods by their versatility and these pants may be the most versatile pieces I own. Their construction is sturdy, the fabric soft, and the cut is incredible. I legitimately wear them 90% of my days and I’ve been stopped numerous times by inquiring minds as to which high-end location I found them at. If I were to break down cost-per-wear, they might even be the most cost-effective piece of clothing I wear.
Traveling has been a major part of my personal and professional life for as long as I can remember and I’ve gone through some bags over the years. That is until I found this wheeled tank from Osprey. I’ve brought this along on multiple ten-day trips to Asia and Europe, and it’s the best bag I’ve ever rolled with (literally).
