There are a few things in life I’ve recently realized are nearly impossible to find. 1.) the perfect wedding dress. 2.) a kitchen table that feels like home and 3.) my dream sofa. My fiancé and I spent months, actually years, looking for our dream sofa. And we ironically found it on a lazy weekend afternoon at an Odds & Ends Furniture Warehouse closeout sale. It was just one of those serendipitous Sundays where we both looked at each other with heart eye emojis and said, “We NEED to buy this sofa!” It was the one.
But, I can honestly say, if it wasn’t for that one rogue unicorn sofa, I think we would still be on the hunt.
Of course, after my sofa search came to full fruition, a unique custom furniture company by the name of Maiden Home, reached out to W&D in regards to partnering on a custom interior design project. As I browsed through their website I couldn’t wait to learn more about their process.
Lately, with my own bohemian home decor company, Arden Trading Co., I’ve been thinking a lot about customizing my own pillows, duvet covers, and even furniture. The world of creating your own home goods is so interesting to me! So when I discovered that you can customize your own furniture with Maiden Home I looked at Kate and said, “We need to do this!” How fun!
If you are looking for a forever piece and care as much about interior design as I do, customizing your own furniture is a great alternative that most people don’t consider. Like recently, I could not find the right dining room chairs to save my life, I was looking for months, and I finally stumbled upon these amazing vintage Russel Wright ball chairs on Craigslist, which were a total steal by the way. Only when I arrived at the seller’s house, I discovered I wasn’t too crazy about the current fabric on the seats. Well, I bought the chairs anyway and am now looking forward to trying my hand at reupholstering them with some moody velvet fabric. I think customizing your own furniture is like creating your own work of art, and I love that each piece will truly feel tailored to you, which is something special and unique that is increasingly hard to find these days.
I was so thrilled to learn the company has over 40 different beautiful fabrics and leathers (including performance options) to choose from. Soon after our initial meeting with Maiden Home, I sat with down with our design team and we really got down to business in designing our decor vision for our favorite little Studio 125 corner.
Here is our furniture creation story from start to finish.
Step 1: Because we had a huge empty space at the end of the studio, a statement sofa was an absolute necessity in this custom project. Our first step was to choose the style, fabric, and wood finish of the sofa, which would act as the staple piece of the room. I like that Maiden Home sends you free swatches, that way you can touch, feel and see the fabric quality, first hand which I think greatly helps facilitate the selection process. After we decided our hearts were set on the Irving sofa in a caramel leather we built the rest of the room around that piece. Style note: I’ve found this tactic helps when designing other rooms within my home as well. Once you choose your key pieces, i.e. your sofa or rug, the rest of the room tends to fall into place.
Step 2: Next, we were onto the chairs that would sit beside the sofa. We all quickly agreed on The Leroy chair in the Performance Chevron Parchment fabric. We imagined it to look crisp and clean next to the lightly-colored tan sofa and paired with the white brick, it would achieve the exact fresh aesthetic we were going for. We were happy to learn that this Crypton Home fabric is essentially spill-proof, which is good, because we have hundreds of people and a surplus of pets in and out of the studio every month.
During our photo shoot, we even tried to spill a little water on the chair to see if it really was spill-proof, and it was! Their performance fabrics actually repel liquids, which you can visibly see below. They say that red wine, when spilled, actually beads up on the surface and can be spot cleaned with soap and water.
This is our finished little Studio 125 corner. We are over the moon with the final product and look of the space. The quality of the fabrics (especially the leather) and the craftsmanship is to die for. The sofa, which is covered in the most beautiful, buttery, caramel-colored leather is surprisingly comfortable yet supportive. This is my favorite piece in the collection!
Step 3: The final design project the W&D team would tackle was the half-decorated living room in the main entrance of the studio. Here, a sofa and rug would need a pair of matching chairs placed (side-by-side) across from the current sofa to complete the space.
I was immediately drawn to the Minetta chairs in sapphire blue velvet. The sleek and sophisticated lines are full of vintage charm and evoke a feminine energy that I love. And this was honestly a straightforward choice because I am really into anything velvet right now. Also, the deep bucket seats that aren’t fully visible in the photos are an added bonus that make these chairs surprisingly spacious and comfy.
These chairs have such a cozy yet regal feel, they make you want to curl up with a hot cup of coffee and a good book. They were the perfect accent next to our blue and sandstone colored rug. Style note: leather and velvet are my current favorite fabrics to mix and match if you are looking to experiment with different textiles.
Step 4: Before customizing, finalizing or ordering any furniture, I highly recommend putting together a final moodboard of the items you’ve selected. This allows you to truly visualize the pieces together side-by-side, and then you’ll be able to tell right away if the furniture you’ve selected is cohesive or not.
If you are interested in the custom furniture option, here is a little more background on Maiden Home and why I think their company stands out from other custom furniture companies:
In wrapping up this design project, I’m so pleased with the outcome of our selections and the overall quality of the furniture. I must say, designing all of our own furniture really has me thinking outside the box on what other design projects we can tackle this year at W&D! A huge thank you to Maiden Home for partnering with us and helping us along in this initiative. If you are looking for a forever piece, I highly recommend you consider Maiden Home’s current collection for your next interior design project!

I love it!
This looks amazing. Can I please ask where the grey dresser from? Thanks!
Larissa, it is from Target, I think Kate purchased it quite some time ago!
I think the Leroy is my unicorn chair, especially after seeing that it comes with an ottoman. I love your new room!
Thanks, Amanda!
That performance fabric sounds amazing – white always look so good in concept but is a disaster IRL after 6 months!
is the fabric comfortable / soft / smooth or is it rough/scratchy?
I’ve never been bold enough to order white furniture but now I’m tempted!
Tara, it is definitely not scratchy, very comfortable actually!
That looks amazingly cozy! It’s so refreshing to see warm cozy patterns and textures in a world of white and blush pink. 🙂

I know what you mean, I am all about the patterns and mixing and matching textiles lately!
I love the mixing of patterns- the velvet especially. I noticed that in most of your rooms you have floral/ greenery. Do you use live plants (in vases etc) in rooms? Or is there a brand of faux florals/branches that you like and recommend? I am looking for something for tall glass vases to brigten up my living room and I can’t find anything that dosn’t look fake. Any ideas you have would be appreciated.
Maggie, this article might help: https://witanddelight.com/2017/08/6-houseplants-beginners/ but we really love banana leaf plants here at the studio!
I’m considering buying a custom sofa so loved reading this! Where did you get the rugs pictured? After the sofa, that’s my next search!
Love these chairs! Also, I really love the colors of the rug in the hero image of this article. Do you happen to know where it’s from? Thanks!
You made a good point that a sofa is a defining feature of a living room so it’s easy to start there when designing one. I’m considering to get custom furniture for my living room because the space is a bit cramped and I’d like to make the most of all the space I have. As such, I’d like to have a sofa that can fit perfectly in one of the awkward corners of the room where it would be in the perfects spot to be warm enough without heating up too much in the morning sun and just has… Read more »
That is our couch and chairs! Can’t wait to get them next month. We’ve been looking for a rug just like that one, any chance you can tell me where it came from?
Hi, Kate! This particular rug is actually vintage so I unfortunately can’t help here!
